By definition, Impressionism is an attempt to accurately record the visual effects of light and color. The principal Impressionist painters were Pierre Augusta Renoir, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley.

Impressionism is defined by the use of small strokes, the use of colors side-by-side without mixing and the use of grey and dark tones. The importance of subject matter is downgraded and the attention is shifted to the artists manipulation of color.
